One misconception that many patients have about Invisalign is that it only involves clear aligners. However, moving your teeth and bite into their properly aligned positions sometimes requires other orthodontic accessories, like rubber bands, or procedures, like interproximal reduction. If you need the latter and you’re interested in learning more about it, then read on to learn what it is, why it’s necessary, and if it hurts.

First, What Is Interproximal Reduction?

Although this may be the first you’re hearing of interproximal reduction, it’s actually an orthodontic technique that has been used since the 1940s! It essentially allows your orthodontist to create more space so your teeth fit together better. This is accomplished either manually or with a specially-designed dental piece, and it usually only takes a minute or two to complete.

How Do I Know If I Need Interproximal Reduction?

Your orthodontist will determine whether or not interproximal reduction is necessary after completing a comprehensive oral exam and creating your custom treatment plan. If they determine that using this orthodontic technique is crucial in order to give you the healthy smile and bite you deserve, they will let you know and provide you with an overview of what to expect. Sometimes, this is completed at the first official visit, and other times it’s completed after progressing through several sets of aligners. Ultimately, it’s dependent on your unique case!

Does Interproximal Reduction Hurt?

Oftentimes, when dental tools come out, a patient’s heart rate starts to go up. However, you have nothing to worry about; interproximal reduction does not hurt. Of course, if you struggle with dental sensitivity or dental-related anxiety and would feel better if the surrounding area was numbed beforehand, you can always ask! Remember, your orthodontist wants you to have the calm, comfortable, and positive experience you deserve on your journey to your dream smile.
