Although discreet alternatives, like Invisalign, have gained significant popularity in recent years, traditional orthodontics is a tried-and-true teeth-straightening treatment that comes with a number of benefits. To start, metal brackets and wires are one of the few solutions that can address complex issues, like severe overcrowding and bite problems. However, if you are unfamiliar with this treatment, you may be surprised when your orthodontist hands you a small tray of dental wax for braces. Here’s why this tool is so important!
Why Is Dental Wax Used with Braces?
First, it’s important to note that dental wax is not the same as candle wax. Dental wax is comprised of natural materials, like beeswax. Thanks to its flexible nature, it can be used to protect your gums and the soft tissue in your mouth from the metal brackets and wires. Doing so will stop unwanted abrasion and protect your tongue, lips, and cheeks from irritation. As you adjust to your braces, you’ll rely on dental wax less and less.
How to Use Dental Wax
Before applying dental wax, wash your hands thoroughly with clean water. From there, brush your teeth for two full minutes. Both of these measures will ensure that no bacteria, food particles, or other debris get trapped when applying the dental wax. Next, pinch a small amount (about half of the size of a pea) and place it over the problematic area. Since it’s water-resistant, you can leave it in place throughout the day without worry. In fact, you can even eat or drink with the dental wax in place – it’s non-toxic!
What If Dental Wax Isn’t Enough?
If you continue to experience discomfort even after applying the dental wax, there are a few other best practices you can follow. First, place a cold compress or towel-wrapped ice pack against the outside of your cheek for 10 minutes at a time. This will reduce puffiness and provide temporary numbing. Next, avoid acidic or sugary foods and beverages, which can exacerbate the issue. Lastly, take over-the-counter pain medication as instructed. If the soreness persists, get in touch with your orthodontist.
Regardless of the orthodontic treatment you choose, there is bound to be some discomfort. After all, your teeth are being shifted into an entirely new position! The good news is that dental wax can smooth out the sharp areas of your braces, making your journey to a straighter smile significantly more comfortable.
